The world's top 2 strength, Vietnam is still hugging sadness

Ranked 2nd in the world, but Vietnam's coffee exports are plummeting. Sadly, Vietnamese coffee export prices are ranked nearly as close to the book, much cheaper than the same type of coffee of other countries.

According to a report of the Department of Agro-processing and Market Development, coffee exports in 8 months of 2019 were estimated at 1.17 million tons and nearly 2 billion USD, down 11.8% in volume and down 21.4%. in value over the same period in 2018.

Since the beginning of the year, Germany and the US continue to be the two largest coffee consuming markets of Vietnam with market share of 13.7% and 9% respectively. With the exception of the Philippines and Malaysia, the export value of coffee increased by 22% and 3.7% respectively, most of the remaining main markets decreased compared to the same period in 2018.

Not only decreasing in export volume, the average export price of coffee in the first 7 months of 2019 was only $ 1,708 / ton, down 11.2% over the same period in 2018.

In fact, Vietnam's coffee prices are decreasing in accordance with the general trend. World coffee prices continued to decline in the first months of 2019 and fell to the lowest level in the past 13 years due to oversupply pressure of the global coffee market.

For example, in Spain, Vietnam is the largest source of coffee for this country with two main types: unroasted coffee; Unaffected and decaffeinated (excluding roasted) accounted for 42.8% and 39.5% of the total import value of these two types of coffee in the first 4 months of 2019. Vietnam exports are now ranked close to the window of the book, much cheaper than the price of the same type of coffee of other countries.

The average import price of Spanish coffee reached 2,712 USD / ton. Meanwhile, the average import price of coffee from Vietnam is only 1,779 USD / ton, much lower than the average import price in this market.

Notably, the average import price of Spanish coffee from France reached a high of 15,670 USD / ton. That is almost 9 times higher than the price of this country's coffee imported from Vietnam.

Similarly, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also cited data from the Korean Trade Commission, in the first four months of this year, Vietnam was also the largest coffee exporter in this market with an output of 11,000 tons, but the price only reached 1.8 USD / kg.

Brazil is the second country in terms of output with nearly 10,600 tons but is exported to South Korea at US $ 2.6 / kg. Colombia coffee also ranked third with over 9,000 tons, the average price reached 3.2USD / kg.

An industry expert said that Vietnamese coffee is currently exported to more than 80 countries and territories around the world with export turnover of over US $ 3 billion, accounting for 14% of market share and 10.4% of value. Global green coffee exports, ranked second after Brazil.

However, the export of coffee is mainly green coffee, accounting for about 90%. Therefore, the profit earned is not commensurate with the amount of goods exported. Coffee export price of Vietnam is also a little lower, even ranked beats compared to other countries with strong coffee export.

According to the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development, most of Vietnam's coffee when harvested does not meet the ripeness, with many impurities, outdated pre-processing machinery, temporary drying grounds on the ground or cement substrate, ... resulting in low quality.

While exports are mainly in the raw form, Vietnamese coffee has no brand name and has largely become the raw material of many countries for deep processing and re-export consumption in Vietnam in the form of instant, instant coffee. ready mix ...

This unit predicts that the price of coffee in the short-term will increase due to the supply decrease from the main producing countries, but the price will remain low for many years. In addition, the demand for coffee increased faster than production will boost demand for coffee imports in the medium and long term.
